A Note from David

Self-sufficiency. Those are two words that we’re appreciating more and more at Heaven’s Family. Because ongoing handouts can do more harm than good. Robert Lupton, in his book Toxic Charity, says it well:

Give once and you elicit appreciation. Give twice and you create anticipation. Give three times and you create expectation. Give four times and it becomes entitlement. Give five times and you establish dependency.

That is why we’d rather help the poor among our spiritual family around the world help themselves, by offering them micro-loans, and by encouraging their hard work and initiative.

Of course, those who cannot help themselves, such as orphans and elderly widows, need our continual compassion. Still, in either case, we are our brothers’ keepers. So glad that you are part of the family! — David

Parting Shot: This Little Piggy Went to the Market

HF staff member Jeff Trotter snapped this photo in Myanmar. We felt sorry for the hog-tied pig, and were hoping the market was not far away.
