A Pretty Waitress with a Story
David's thoughts on this song...
Some years ago I joined a service that critiqued songs submitted by wanna-be songwriters like myself. Songs that were considered good enough were forwarded to agents in Nashville. Most of the demand was for Country music, so I tried my hand at writing six tunes. Only one, however, was ever forwarded. (It was titled, I'm Trading You In, Winona. Nashville didn't know if the song was about a girl or a car, so my song went down in a blaze of human glory.) Now released to the general public for the first time, A Pretty Waitress with a Story is a Country song with a happy ending, and God does receive some glory if you listen closely!

1) I strolled into Mel's Diner
Sat at my usual booth
A young waitress brought the menu
Her name tag said "Ruth"
She asked me how I was doing
I said, "I really can't complain"
She smiled a moment, then gave me a big sigh
"Mister how I wish I could say the same"
chorus
A Pretty Waitress with a Story
Heaven sent my way
She would tell me 'bout a childhood wrong, a man who's gone
And a prayer to find him one day
Another prisoner like me
Longing to escape a painful memory
Heaven sent to me
A Pretty Waitress with a Story
2.) I said to Ruth, "I'm a pretty good listener
Why don't you tell me what is wrong?"
She bit her lip, and as her eyes got misty she said
"I'm afraid that might take too long
My troubles started at the age of seven
When my momma left my dad
I've never seen him again and I loved him.
And I've been hurt, searching for the love he had for me."
3.) I said to Ruth, "Were you livin' in Memphis
When your mom took you away?
Do you remember if your daddy was cryin'?
Was he beggin' her to stay?"
Ruth looked at me in a moment of wonder
Then we both realized the truth
I stood and hugged her for the first time in twelve years
Tears poured from the eyes of my daughter, Ruth
