Lead Me Higher
David's thoughts on this song...
The apostle Paul wrote, "Not that I have already become perfect, but I press on in order that I may lay hold of that for which also I was laid hold of by Christ Jesus .I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus" (Phil. 3:12, 14). There is, indeed, and upward call of God. It is not only a call to a holy heaven, but also a call to holiness here on earth. Until we reach perfection, the upward call continues to call us higher.
Just prior to this particular passage in Philippians, Paul mentioned the righteousness he had gained that comes from faith in Christ (see Phil. 3:9). Too often, we think the word righteousness means "right standing" rather than "right living." Contextually, it is clear that Paul was not just thinking of right standing in this passage. Jesus not only gives believers right standing before God, but also empowers believers to live rightly. We, of course, must cooperate, as did Paul, who "press[ed] on toward the goal for the prize" (Phil. 3:14). He was determined to "lay hold of that for which [he] was laid hold of by Christ" (Phil. 3:12). There could be no worthier goal for any of us. Our prayer should be, Lord, Lead Me Higher, and help me be ready to stand before You.

Who may ascend, Lord, Your holy hill? • Those who have clean hands, doing Your will • Those who are truthful and seek Your face • Pure-hearted servants are blessed in that place •• Lead me higher • Lord, I am hearing Your upward call • I press onward • I have my eyes fixed on the prize • My righteousness comes from Christ •• All that was gain, I now count as loss • Finding my life by taking Your cross • The world and its darkness are fading away • But the path of the righteous shines brighter each day •• Lord, You are coming in clouds of the air • All those who love You will rise to You there • Your book will be opened to judge every one • They'll be rewarded for all they have done
