Prayer for Holiness

Those who are born again by God's Spirit soon notice that they are not instantly and automatically perfect. Although they now have a desire to obey God as never before, they discover that there are also wrong desires that still lurk within them. There is a war between the desire to do right and do wrong. Moreover, as new believers study God's Word and learn His commandments, they realize their need for further repentance. This is the beginning of the biblical process known as progressive sanctification. Our growth in holiness is the result of our cooperation with the Holy Spirit within us.

Prayer for Holiness attempts to bring into balance our responsibility and God's responsibility in the sanctification process, just as Scripture teaches. Without His Holy Spirit working within us, we cannot be as holy as God desires. Yet, without our cooperation and effort, the Holy Spirit's fire is quenched. Thus we must "discipline ourselves for the purpose of godliness" (see 1 Tim. 4:7-8). God's desire is that we become like Jesus, and He is dedicated to that end. Are you?
