Worthy is the Lamb
David's thoughts on this song...
The exiled apostle John once saw what all of us who believe in Jesus can look forward to seeing one day—worship in heaven. There, Jesus is the central focus, and He is worshipped for who is and what He did. John wrote, "And when He had taken the book, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, having each one a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. And they sang a new song, saying, 'Worthy art Thou to take the book, and to break its seals; for Thou wast slain, and didst purchase for God with Thy blood men from every tribe and tongue and people and nation. And Thou hast made them to be a kingdom and priests to our God; and they will reign upon the earth.' And I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne and the living creatures and the elders; and the number of them was myriads of myriads, and thousands of thousands, saying with a loud voice, 'Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing'" (Rev. 5:8-12).
Worthy is the Lamb is derived primarily from this awe-inspiring passage of Scripture. I was impressed that, although the living creatures and the elders were counted (four and twenty-four, respectively), and even the angels, although so numerous, were accounted for using the phrase "myriads of myriads, and thousands of thousands," concerning the redeemed from the earth, John wrote that they could not be counted (see Rev. 7:9). Praise God! There will be lots of people in heaven! Additionally, they will be "from every nation and all tribes and peoples and tongue" (Rev. 7:9), fulfilling God's ancient promise to Abraham that through His descendant (Christ), all the peoples of the earth would be blessed (see Gen. 22:18). Let us hasten that future scene to its fulfillment by working to reach the thousands of remaining people groups in the world who, as of yet, have no representatives who will worship Jesus in heaven.
