Many of today's 350,000 Amish are lost. They were born into spiritual darkness and do not know the Living God. Can you help send them the light of the gospel?

I couldn't believe my ears! A senior leader of a 300-year-old cult wanted to meet with me in secret. I had been praying for such an opportunity for years. I could hardly contain my excitement as I left the restaurant and walked out into the cool evening air. Not only was my life about to take a drastic turn but, unknown to me at the time, the eternal destinies of many others were about to be changed. Let me tell you the whole story…

Growing up, my parents would sometimes take my siblings and me on weekend getaways into rural Pennsylvania. We would often pass Amish families driving their horse-drawn buggies. I was always fascinated by their simple lifestyles, their famous work ethic, and their tight-knit communities. I never understood, however, the reason they chose to live as though they were frozen in time 100 years ago. Still, Amish life seemed idylic.

I've since discovered that my original perception of Amish life was nowhere near reality. Since Becky and I moved into the heart of one of the largest Old Order Amish communities in the nation, we've been interacting on a much deeper level with many Amish, and ex-Amish people.

I suppose I should not have been surprised to discover that Amish folks are just as human as the rest of us. I was certainly shocked, however, to discover the levels of drunkenness, drug abuse, sexual immorality, and even incest and child abuse that plague their communities. I've come to understand now that they've all been born into a cult that holds them in deep spiritual darkness. They do what they do because they believe they will go to hell otherwise. Salvation is something that is earned by keeping hundreds of man-made rules, and there is no assurance of salvation. Anyone who is sure of salvation is labeled as being prideful. To leave the Amish is a certain ticket to hell, and those who do will be shunned for life by their closest family members, communities and friends. It is tragic.

I do think that many Amish people have a sincere desire to please God and to one day be in heaven, but they are trapped in dead religion from birth and don't know how to escape.

Keep in mind that the Amish will never hear the gospel through TV, radio, Christian books, or even the Bible, because only the Martin Luther German Bible is read in their church gatherings, and few of them understand German. Reading an English Bible (a language they can understand) is discouraged by Amish leaders, because it is considered "dangerous."

Amish people are discouraged by their leaders from reading their Bibles for themselves and many will never hear the gospel.

Over the past few years, I felt like I've been banging my head against a wall as I've tried to engage Amish people in spiritual conversations. They resist, as they all live in fear of being misled, which would result in their being shunned and excommunicated. In all honesty, I was starting to lose hope of ever reaching any of them.

This leads me back to where I began this letter: the evening of January 31st of this year. After discovering a more liberal Old Order Amish community about 30 minutes from my house, I then learned of an Amish minister (2nd in command in Amish ecclesiastic authority) in that same community who had just been born again. I had to meet him!

So my wife, Becky, and I invited him and his wife out to dinner at a local Mexican restaurant. As we sat and chatted the evening away, my heart was overflowing with joy. Finally, some Amish people who were truly born again and spiritually hungry. And an Amish minister, nonetheless!

Just when I thought the evening couldn't get any better, the minister told me that his bishop (the highest in command) had read a teaching I had written and wanted to meet with me. "When?" I asked. "Right after dinner" he responded.

We quickly finished our meal and we were led to their bishop's house under the cover of darkness. As I secretly met with him and his wife, my heart almost stopped. Because of reading an English Bible, he and his wife were the very first folks among their community to be born again. He is the one who led our dinner guests to the Lord just a few weeks earlier.

This was unheard of! Not only was an Amish minister now born again and on fire for the Lord, but so was his bishop!!

Because it would be impossible to hide their spiritual rebirth (you can't hide a light under a bushel!) it was only a matter of time before the rest of the community would find out about their "new faith" and ultimately "deliver them over to Satan" through excommunication.

So we devised a plan. They would continue living an Amish lifestyle (as long as it didn't conflict with Scripture) and ask the Holy Spirit to help them speak to fellow Amish folks whom they knew had the potential of being "good soil" for the gospel, and they would invite them to secret Bible studies.

Within days, disciples started making disciples. And those disciples then did the same and made more disciples. Eyes were opened. Lives were transformed. Eternal destinies were changed. Devout families who were trapped for centuries were finding salvation at last.

During our secret weekly Bible studies, chills would crawl up my spine as the host family would close the window curtains so that no one outside their house would witness the forbidden meeting occurring inside, as hungry hearts studied and discussed the Bible. Several regular Amish drunkards were set free from their habit. One desperate Amish man asked his born-again bishop to secretly meet him in his horse barn at 2:00am to discuss the Bible! He was afraid that if his wife discovered their meeting, she would've taken their kids and divorced him!

So far, about two dozen adults (plus children) in their community have been born again. (It's still growing as disciples continue making disciples!)

The hammer of persecution did eventually fall—as they all expected—and now all two dozen adults have been excommunicated. The bishop and minister were of course stripped of their positions and shunned. All because they have been born again and "adopted a new faith."

Some of the new believers who were employed by other Amish people lost their jobs. Some who had businesses lost employees. One had to choose between his fiancée or Jesus. With a broken but joyful heart, he chose Jesus. Everyone has lost family members and friends. But they have all found the "treasure in the field" (Matt. 13:44).

Two dozen Amish adults have been excommunicated for being born again. Some have lost jobs. All have lost family and friends.

Today, there are around 350,000 Amish people spread across the United States in hundreds of settlements. Rules vary from community to community. But all are trapped in the same spiritual bondage that's been passed down from generation to generation. The large majority of the Amish are lost and in desperate need of a Savior. They need to know what God's Word actually says, in a language they can understand!

Because Amish families are large, and because every Amish family has relatives scattered across the U.S., news travels fast among them. So it is very likely that most of them have already heard about our local Amish awakening since it is so unusual for an Amish bishop to defect from the ranks, not to mention doing it with an Amish minister and two dozen other Amish adults. Of course, the version that has been spread across the country among Amish communities has been very negative.

So I believe the Lord is leading us to set the record straight and tell the other 350,000 Amish how they, too, can be born again by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. To that end, we intend to soon send printed copies of my evangelistic article, "The Truth about the Johnsonburg Awakening" to 62,903 Amish households across North America (you can read that article at HeavensFamily.org/Johnsonburg). That means as many as 90% of Amish households across North America will soon have a chance to hear the gospel!

Those who receive my six-page letter will have an opportunity to respond by mailing a card back to us through which they can request an English translation of the Bible, more information about being born again, or a connection with an Amish-background believer who is now serving the Lord.

The cost is only about 60 cents per Amish household, which includes printing and postage. The total cost is $37,575. Praise God, we've already raised $21,000 of that total. So we need your help to raise the balance.

So, first of all, please pray. To my knowledge, there has never been a similar outreach to Amish people in their hundreds of years of history. We need to cover this outreach with prayer. The Amish prison fortress has been standing for centuries. And second, please give. In order to reach every Amish household with the gospel by this historic evangelistic effort, we need your help. You can send the keys to eternal freedom to an entire Amish family for only 60 cents.

For $30 you can reach 50 Amish families. For $300 you can reach 500 families. For $600 you can reach 1,000 families.

Whatever we receive beyond the $37,575 needed for this outreach will be used to help fund English follow-up Bibles and other follow-up literature.

In closing, thank you! This is what true love for the Amish looks like.

So glad for the us in Jesus,
