With her infectious giggles and adorable toothless grin, you’d never guess that six-year-old Nabya has a heartbreaking past.
Before Nabya was born, her family was in crisis. Brought together through an arranged marriage, her father, Rajesh, was an alcoholic and a gambler, and her mother, Gurbaskh, was forced to work to pay for both his sinful lifestyle and the needs of the family. Gurbaskh begged her husband over and over to stop gambling and drinking and to find employment, but her persistence just made him angry.
Weary, and in the late stages of pregnancy with Nabya, her second child, Gurbaskh had no other choice but to keep working so that she and her children could survive. After she gave birth to Nabya, she suffered ill health and postpartum depression. She begged her husband to have mercy on her and to get a job so they would have food to eat, but he turned a deaf ear to her pleas. In a final, desperate attempt to get his attention, Gurbaskh set herself on fire. By the time the neighbors discovered her, it was too late. She died in the ambulance on the way to the hospital.
Everyone blamed Nabya’s father for the tragedy. The neighbors threatened to make him an outcast if he did not take care of his two daughters. He barely managed to provide for them for the next five years. Unwilling to bear his responsibility as a father any longer, he sent his children into Muneer Children’s Home.
Nabya hasn’t lived at Muneer Children’s Home for even a year yet, but already her life has changed for the better. She is being loved and looked after, she is going to school, and she wants to become a doctor when she grows up. Most importantly, Nabya is learning about Jesus.
