“I Love to Pray”

An incredible woman’s testimony of strength

Dear Friends,

My heart broke as I learned of how Rebecca (not her real name) suffered in silence for so many years. But she was not the only one.

While in the country of Rwanda last month, I met with women who had been deeply affected by the 1994 Genocide. Also known as the genocide against the Tutsi, it was 100 days of mass slaughter by members of the Hutu government. Many civilian Hutus co-opted into their reign of terror and an estimated 800,000 Rwandans were killed. There have been many strides towards peace and reconciliation since those painful days.

During a worship meeting in the capital city of Kigali, I met with Rebecca and many women like her. Rebecca’s tragic story gripped my attention as she shared how the genocide had stolen the lives of her husband and their seven children. She was mercilessly raped and purposely infected by HIV. Any chance of having a normal life after such loss seemed unimaginable! But when I asked about her life now and what she enjoys doing, her immediate response was, “I like to pray.” The Holy Spirit is the only One who can truly comfort the deepest recesses of the soul. How thankful I am to have had the opportunity to see first-hand the redemptive, supernatural strength of our Savior shine through a broken soul who has suffered so much!

The Victims of Sexual Violence Ministry is now partnering with Prison Fellowship Rwanda, who will host women like Rebecca each month for a meal and fellowship. They will also enjoy a Bible Study and a chance to learn a vocational skill such as sewing or basket weaving. Having a safe place for a time of healthy fellowship with women who have similar stories of heartbreak and redemption is a vital component to the healing process.

Donations to the Victims of Sexual Violence Ministry are helping to make this monthly ministry to Rebecca and other women possible. Thank you to those of you whose gifts are making a difference in the lives of these tremendous women!

Blessings,

Thank you Patty and the entire team of Heaven’s Family Ministries for impacting the lives of many, especially the women living with HIV in Rwanda raped during the genocide of Tutsi of 1994. God bless you richly
