The author of The Disciple Making Minister, David Servant, and I have a lot in common. We share the same first name, obviously, and we both work for Heaven's Family. But we also both wear glasses, and have strikingly dark, thick hair. This can sometimes cause confusion when corresponding with people overseas whom neither of us have met in person.
You've probably never heard of Cebuano—often referred to as Bisaya or Visayan—because it isn't a language with which many people come into contact. But over 20 million people speak this language in the central and lower islands of the Philippines, one which was heavily influenced by Spanish during the colonial period.
Based on questions he received from pastors during years of conducting pastors' conferences around the world, David wrote The Disciple-Making Minister with Christian leaders in mind who have had little opportunity to receive Bible training. Sadly, many Christian leaders in poor countries are being seduced by unbalanced and misleading television preachers who broadcast internationally. Those Christian leaders subsequently become the proverbial "blind leading the blind," to borrow Jesus' expression. The Disciple-Making Minister helps Christian leaders to reclaim their biblical calling to make disciples who obey all of Jesus' commandments. Its 500 pages cover many topics relevant to Christian ministry.
I liked him from the moment we met. Like most Mexicans, he has three names that reveal his lineage. His middle name, Mercado, is his father's last name, and his last name, Hernandez, is his mother's last name.
"I love you." With those words, Ashok ended the most difficult letter he'd ever written. His wife, Lakshi, would read it soon after his suicide. Ashok's poignant farewell was no pretense. He loved Lakshi deeply and would do anything for her. Several years earlier she had developed chronic bleeding—like the biblical woman healed when she touched Jesus' robe. Desperate to find a cure for the love of his life, Ashok spent all he had on doctors, medicines, and Hindu idols. None helped. Lakshi grew steadily weaker.
His parents raised him to be a Christian, and he'd been attending church faithfully for 36 years. He sensed, however, a spiritual void in his life, and something told him that what he needed could be found in the Bible. So That Nuai took his Bible and journeyed deep into the neighboring jungle where nothing could distract him. For seven days he read God's Word, and the "jungle book" did its work in him. When he emerged a week later, he was a changed man, a true believer in the Lord Jesus Christ, born again by the Holy Spirit. That was 50 years ago, and it was the beginning of That Nuai's incredible journey.
