Jin Sang awoke, wondering where she was and how long she'd been unconscious. Her head throbbed with pain, and she could hardly open her left eye. She could feel cold metal cutting into her wrists, restraining her to a chair. As Jin fully regained an awareness of her surroundings, she also realized that a uniformed man stood over her—the source, she now had no doubt, of her pain and her blackout.
Turn around! Go back! Those emphatic words left us stunned. Our team had been traveling for two days to join a gathering of persecuted Christians in Kandhamal, a small city in the Indian state of Orissa. Now we were being turned back less than five miles from our destination. The pastor at the other end of the cell phone told us that over 100 police officers were waiting just ahead, ready to stop us. He also informed us that 1,500 persecuted believers—20 times as many as we expected—had poured in from the surrounding villages.
"If you try to escape, you'll be killed!" With those words, Kutty's older brother bolted the bedroom door shut, and Kutty slumped to the floor in pain. His brother's brutal blows ceased only after he finally agreed to read the Qur'an. That first assault only foreshadowed what lay in Kutty's future.
