Everything Changes

David's thoughts about this song...

Everything Changes is based on three familiar stories found in Scripture about people who encountered Jesus and experienced miracles. All of them impress me, but it is the "least" of the three that causes me to marvel the most. The miracle I'm referring to is Jesus' changing water into wine. I can understand the importance of tax collector being saved and a widow's son being raised from the dead. But creating more wine for a wedding feast where the wine had run out? And beyond that, creating wine that was superior to what had already been served? Obviously, God cares about the minor as well as the major problems we face. And perhaps that wedding feast in Cana became a foreshadowing of a future wedding feast at which God will serve "refined, aged wine" (Isaiah 25:6; see There is a Banquet), wine that will never run out, forever replenished by the Son of God.

This song was birthed one evening when my son, Stephen, showed me a nice three chord progression on the piano, which I then played on the guitar. After he went to bed, I kept playing it, adding one additional chord. With a Latin strum I knew I had a Latin song on the way. I had to write something happy! The next morning I wrote the lyrics. We had lots of fun recording it as Stephen contributed his keyboard skills to add his own synthesized accordion melody. Way to go, Stevo!

There was a party at Matthew's estate • Con men and harlots streamed through his gate • But this weekend's party was unlike the rest • Matthew invited one sinless guest• • (His new Savior!) • Jesus arrived and a hush filled that place • Holy conviction gripped every face • Then Matthew said, "Come near, everyone • I'd like you to meet God's only Son • He can save us!" •• Everything changes when Jesus arrives • He cleanses sinners • He changes lives • He makes the faces of sad people shine • He changes water into new wine • (He is so kind!) •• There was a funeral coming from Nain • Led by a widow sobbing with pain • Her only son was gone now too • She prayed out loud, "God, where are You? • What will I do?" • When Jesus found her He lovingly said • "There is no need now to weep for your dead" • He touched the coffin • Up sat the boy • His mother astonished, shouted for joy: • "Thank you, Jesus!" •• There was a wedding in Galilee • More people came than the hosts did foresee • The feast had just started--a wonderful time • But so many people soon drank all the wine • (Not a good sign!) • A special gift Jesus gave to the bride • Gallons of water He changed into wine • The headwaiter tasted the new wine and asked • "Why has the best been saved for the last? • Serve the guests fast!"
