[You Made the] Rain, Rain Go Away…

“No school today!” For the school children of the Western world, snow days are generally a much-anticipated reprieve from studies and, during winter months, it is common to hear children talk excitedly about the days they’ve missed from school. But for students in the under-developed parts of the world, missing school is no joyful occasion. Especially for students in Kenya. Heavy rains there can last for days and take away valuable time for these children who have so little—and for whom education is the ladder to climb out of poverty.

Food or School?

Boniface Mutuku is 7 years old, and he and his mother live in a slum in Kenta, Kenya. Hard working and with an iron will, Boniface's mother makes a meager living by scavenging construction sites for discarded wood, which she then sells to hotels as firewood for cooking.

More Than Able

Children with disabilities are especially close to my heart. My Aunt Elizabeth was born with cerebral palsy. Blessed with a brilliant brain, she is currently attending college in her 40s. But she is living life in a wheelchair, and it is often difficult for others to understand when she speaks.

Desperate to Learn

God loves Muslims, too. The mother of Halima, Asha and Mohammad learned that lesson recently. Distraught that her poverty was keeping her children out of school—thus condemning them to a life of begging to survive—she prayed at the local mosque everyday that Allah would help her send her children to school.
