Not the Israel I Expected

Modern Israel, I've come to find out, is not just the romanticized land of the Bible, but it's also a messy melting pot of people who often carry a lot of pain, and have found various self-destructive, addictive ways to suppress it—at least for a few hours. Take away modern technology, however, and life is not all that different from Jesus' day—instead of Samaritans there are Palestinians; instead of lepers there are drug and alcohol addicts. And then there are the women who, just like 2,000 years ago, feel they have no option for survival but to sell their bodies by the hour. For many Jews and Christians, these kinds of people are to be avoided.

Termite Technology

During two lovely days of this trip to Ethiopia, I’ve had the blessing of visiting very poor women who’ve received two or three goats from Heaven’s Family. The goats—always at least one male and one female—are absolutely free, but there’s a catch. The women have to agree to pay us back in kids.

An Unprecedented Disaster

We've all watched the suffering of thousands as Hurricane Harvey mercilessly pounded Houston, Texas, and the surrounding areas, feeling painfully helpless to do anything about it. This was an unprecedented disaster in many ways.

The Queen’s Camels

This afternoon I had the bittersweet blessing of dedicating a new water well funded by Heaven’s Family’s Safe Water Ministry. It was sweet because the beneficiaries, tribespeople from miles around, have been drinking unsafe, muddy water all their lies. Now, for the first time, they will have pure, safe water to drink. They will no longer be plagued by waterborne diseases.

The Holy Spirit’s First Name

Ethiopia runs on a biblical clock, starting with the sun's consistent rising around 6am (we're near the equator), which is considered the start of "the first hour of the day." Today (Sunday), church began at 10:00 on my watch, but at 4:00 Ethiopian time.

Special Report: Infiltrating North Korea

It’s happening yet again. North Korea’s despotic leader, Kim Jong Un, is breathing threats of annihilation against South Korea and the United States. The media loves reporting this all-too-usual story to audiences anxiously concerned about the risks of nuclear confrontation, because fear generates good ratings, and good ratings generate advertising dollars.

A Place of Rejects Becomes a “Blessed Camp”

How many young, newly married couples do you know who would give up the comfort of their lives and move from a big city and their high-paying jobs to serve others in a small, coastal town? This month I met with just such a couple whose time is now spent selflessly serving a small community of patients diagnosed with a severe disease in Msambweni, Kenya.

Songs of Thankfulness

I have just returned from my first trip to Africa as director of the Victims of Sexual Violence Ministry. I was fortunate enough to visit the Women of Wellness (WoW) Center, in Goma, DR Congo, for the graduation ceremony of quite a few talented and truly special young women. This place is filled with treasures of inestimable worth; beautiful women who have overcome great hardship, poverty and oftentimes tragedy. But they never cease to inspire me with their tenacity as they face each new day with thankfulness.

Building Up Leaders

Last month we conducted a training seminar on Christian leadership and church planting. The Unreached People Groups Ministry subsidizes the costs for leaders from unreached people groups to attend Bible-based training. Our mission is to provide church leaders with a strong foundation in the Word, so that they can continue to reach unreached people groups and win souls for Christ. We believe there is no better strategy than to invest in leaders.
